Louis XIV began the Palace of Versialles in 1669. Upon completion, Versailles was the largest royal residence in Europe. Thousands of laborers worked on Versailles.
The costs of building the palace are still unclear since Louis XIV destroyed the records of costs. Recent estimates place the cost at over two billion dollars.
Housing thousands of nobles and their entourages, Versailles was a show place of 17th century Europe. Located about twelve miles from Paris, Versailles provided at least 10,000 peoples with housing.
Aside from its residential functions, Versailles was a symbol of Louis XIV's power. One of the most significant rooms in Versailles was the Hall of Mirrors. Seventeen tall windows reflect windows on one side with gilded frames and chandeliers hanging from a painted ceiling.
When built, Versailles featured 5,000 acres of gardens, forests and lawns. the fountains were so prevalent that water was used in them only for special events. Statues were featured on the grounds as well as throughout the palace and other buildings. Other artwork graced the estate as Louis XIV was one of the greatest art patron of the era.
At 500 member kitchen staff kept Louis's appetite satisfied. Louis was known for his enormous appetite, enjoying eggs, soups, game and pastries.
The costs of building and maintaining Versailles will help engender the resentment that will fuel the French Revolution in the coming decades.
