The results of the poll are in. Where would you go for a romantic get-away? The majority of you voted for Paris, the City of Lights. Somehow, I am not surprised. What is it about Paris that evokes romance and mystery? I always envision images of lovers sequestered atop the Eiffel Tower, or cuddling in a sidewalk café in the springtime. Just as Las Vegas brings to mind casinos and showgirls, and Venice conjures up gondola rides in the canals, Paris has become synonymous with romance. At what point did Paris become the unofficial city for lovers? While there is no concrete answer to that question, I have my own theories.
Any city with such a long and sumptuous history cannot help but call to the romantics of the world. To walk the same streets as Marie Antoinette (okay, she probably didn’t walk too often) Voltaire and Monet, to breath the same air as Louis XIV, sends shivers of delight through me. Perhaps it is the history buff in me, but being surrounded by landmarks like the Notre Dame and Eiffel Tower can make a person feel part of the bigger picture. To know that thousands of other people, including the royal, famous, and infamous have been there before you, is awe inspiring to me. I can only imagine experiencing the city with someone you love.
Like a beautiful woman, Paris beckons with an alluring smile, reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. As long as there are people enthralled by history and legend, Paris will remain on its pedestal of romance and mystery.
